Environment

Development and implementation of an Environmental Management System (EMS) is underway at Port of Virginia.  The Port received ISO 14001:2004 certification for its terminal operations in June 2008.  The Port of Virginia is the first major port on the East Coast to receive the ISO certification. The EMS targets air and water quality improvements at Newport News Marine Terminal, Norfolk International Terminals, and Portsmouth Marine Terminal. Many of the programs listed below have been or will be incorporated into the system.

ISO 14001:2004 Certification
The ISO 14001 certification is expected to:

  • Ensure VPA meets or exceeds all applicable Federal, State, and Local environmental laws and regulations
  • Prevent activities and conditions that pose a threat to human health, safety, and the environment through proactive environmental leadership and compliance
  • Ensure adherence to an established framework for setting objectives and targets that demonstrate a commitment to continual improvement
  • Integrate environmental costs, risks, and impacts into port project development
  • Promote pollution prevention and environmental awareness throughout all levels of the organization.
